Plečnik’s interventions along the Ljubljanica River constitute one of the city’s central public spaces. Designed as a string of straightforward lines embracing the river, Trnovo Quay was transformed into a city promenade or park, and one of the city’s most lyrical settings. The wide Cobblers’ Bridge was designed as a market square above the water, inviting visitors to use it as needed and desired. By integrating the old stone bridge into the new composition of the Three Bridges and by building the Central Market, Plečnik laid out a central venue of public life, one rich in typologies and interstitial spaces and which promotes living with water, evoking the spirit of the Mediterranean. The axis concludes with the Sluice Gate, its triumphant arch across the river shaping the symbolic conclusion of the river gesture.
