Site

The World Heritage Site Plečnik’s Ljubljana consists of seven components. Together, they represent an outstanding example of human-centred design of public spaces, buildings, and green areas.

The core of the UNESCO World Heritage List inscription consists of two urban axes. The Land Axis – Green Promenade begins at Trnovo Bridge and runs across French Revolution Square along Vegova Street with the National and University Library, ending at Congress Square with Zvezda Park. In parallel with the Land Axis runs the Water Axis, which consists in the Promenade along the embankments and bridges of the Ljubljanica River from Trnovo Quay to Plečnik’s Sluice Gate. These two axes are connected by transversal axes, which co-shape the city’s urban network. Its historic urban core connects with vital points in both urban and rural suburbs to create the broader spatial network of Ljubljana (the Church of St. Michael, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, and Plečnik’s Žale – Garden of All Saints).
