Green Promenade along Vegova Street (the Land Axis)

Plečnik’s approach to creating the Land Axis embodies urban design in the broadest sense of the word. The architect redesigned streets (Vegova Street), erected monuments (the Illyrian column) and inserted small-scale structures (e.g. a weather house or the terrace in front of the National and University Library), replaced paving, and added balustrades and stairways. He also thoughtfully introduced new planting and landscaping schemes (Vegova Street and Zvezda Park). The complex nature of his design of the land axis exploits the powerful potential of urban design – how a series of well-planned interventions can be employed to achieve a range of readings and use of the existing urban space, introduce diverse meanings and functions, and create a more human-friendly and inclusive public space by adding greenery and adapting the space to the pedestrian.
